Maryland Whipsnakes faceoff specialist Joe Nardella

PLL Fantasy: Three start ’em, three sit ’em for Baltimore Weekend

By Paul Lamonaca | Jul 31, 2024

Start

Shane Knobloch, Midfield, Carolina Chaos (11 coins)

I have been waiting to put Knobloch into my start column, and I believe this is the perfect week to do so. The rookie midfielder put up 46 fantasy points last weekend in San Diego a week after scoring the game-winning overtime goal in Fairfield. Knobloch is the party-starter for Carolina’s offense.

Knobloch leads Carolina’s midfield unit in both touches and total points this season. He’s been able to find the back of the net (5G, 1T in his last two games) and is not afraid to dodge to the cage.

At 11 coins, Knobloch could be the steal of the week yet again, especially if he continues to be Carolina’s top midfielder.

Joe Nardella, Faceoff, Maryland Whipsnakes (Game 2; 28 coins)

Nardella holds the highest faceoff percentage in the league at 67.1% and is averaging 18.1 fantasy points per game. Another fascinating stat about Nardella is that he is second in the league in ground balls behind Trevor Baptiste, and Baptiste has played two more games.

Nardella is worth 28 fantasy coins against the Boston Cannons on Sunday. It will be his second of two games on the weekend against a team whose major weakness is its ability to win faceoffs.

Boston’s faceoff specialist Zac Tucci has slipped under 50% on the season and has struggled to put up any substantial fantasy points since Philadelphia Weekend in June.

Matt Moore, Attack, Utah Archers (16 coins)

Before the Archers’ bye week, Moore put up a career fantasy game in Utah’s win over the California Redwoods. Moore finished the game with 65 fantasy points, more than tripling his second-best performance of the year.

Utah will be facing off against Carolina on Saturday. The Chaos have the best defense in the league, and Utah will need to find some scoring threats beyond its usual scorers like Grant Ament and Connor Fields. Moore fits that mold perfectly.

For 16 fantasy coins, Moore is a solid option if you are looking to spend less on a second attackman.

Sit

Luke Wierman, Faceoff, Denver Outlaws (14 coins)

The rookie out of Maryland has cooled down considerably over the last few weeks. In Wierman’s last two outings, he totaled just 9.8 fantasy points against two of the lower-tier faceoff specialists in Tucci and Alec Stathakis

Wierman will be facing off against one of the league’s best in TD Ierlan this Saturday. In their last meeting, Wierman put up 11.3 fantasy points to Ierlan’s 30.8.

I wouldn't take the risk on an inexpensive faceoff specialist. Spend the coins on a safer option and get the points.

Tom Schreiber, Midfield, Utah Archers (42 coins)

With Ament’s transition to midfield being a net positive for the Archers’ offensive group, Schreiber has not produced the same MVP numbers that he put up in 2023.

Schreiber’s shooting percentage has significantly decreased from 28% to 19%, and his number of touches has dropped this season, as well.

Schrieber is the most expensive midfielder this week, and he will be going up against the league’s best goaltender, Blaze Riorden.

With how much attention Schreiber attracts from opposing defenses, I don’t think his ROI will be in fantasy owners’ favor this weekend.

Michael Sowers, Attack, Philadelphia Waterdogs (49 coins)

It’s been a rough season for the Waterdogs, to say the least. Sowers, the team’s star on attack, was held to just two fantasy points in Philly's loss to New York last weekend.

Regardless of his performance, Sowers still holds one of the highest salary cap hits. For a team that is all but eliminated from playoff contention this year, I would not risk the coins on Sowers this week.

Philadelphia will be playing Maryland on Saturday. The Whipsnakes’ top cover defender, Matt Dunn, will most likely have the assignment of guarding Sowers. Dunn put up 57 fantasy points the last time the Dogs and Whips played back in June.
