Behind the 2024 Indigenous Heritage Logos

When looking at woodland artwork… You can see the life force, soul, vibe, or spirit of what it is you’re looking at.

In honor of Indigenous Heritage Weekend, all eight teams will be wearing special edition uniforms on June 28th and 29th in Minneapolis. Designed by Patrick Hunter, an Ojibwe artist in collaboration with the Anishinabe. The PLL will be donating a portion of proceeds from every jersey sale to the Anishinabe Baagaadowewin, a non-profit dedicated to sharing Anishinabe history and culture through lacrosse.Take a deeper look into the design and meaning behind each team's special edition logo.

Through PLL Nation, fans at a Starter status or above can also customize their PLL App icon to show support

Woodland art began in the 70's in Ontario Canada. Made famous by artists like Norval Morrisseau and Daphne Odjig. When looking at woodland artwork, try and imagine you have spiritual xray goggles and can see the life force, soul, vibe, or spirit of what it is you’re looking at.

Traditionally in the clan system, bears are the protectors and law enforcers in the community. The clan system was how communities were organized and still are a big part of Indigenous peoples lives today. Buffalo to us, were revered because of what they did for our communities. We built our homes with their hides, they nourished and sustained our communities and were treated with a lot of respect for their sacrifice.

Some of the designs were re-designs of your team logos and Indigenized through the spiritual lens of my work. I actually haven’t looked at them since I sent them and am so stoked about how cool they look 🙂 Can’t wait to see them on your players!

The relationship between Ma’iingan and the Anishinaabe (Ojibwe) extends all the way back to the Anishinaabe creation story. In that story, Ma’iingan was provided by the Creator to be a companion to the Original Man. As a result of this and other teachings, Anishinaabe people consider the wolf their relative. Source
