Chris Kavanagh is the Champion Player of the Week coming off his five-point (4G, 1A) professional debut against the Denver Outlaws on Friday night. His four goals are the most by a rookie in a debut since 2018.
Kavanagh, California and the club’s new staff led by head coach Anthony Kelly picked up their first win of a new era of Redwoods lacrosse by beating the Outlaws 15-12. It marked a feather in Kavanagh’s cap as he beat his older brother, Pat, in their first game against one another in the pro ranks.
Kavanagh started at attack alongside his former Notre Dame coach and long-time family friend Ryder Garnsey. The two connected on Kavanagh’s first-career goal on a sweet cross-field feed from Garnsey and a beautiful underhand rip from Kavanagh.Â
Even before his first score, Kavanagh assisted former Fighting Irish teammate Brian Tevlin for Kavanagh’s first career point. The No. 10 pick added two more goals and even made sure to grab the ball that fellow rookie Josh Balcarcel scored his first goal with.
Led by Kavanagh California’s rookie class looked dangerous under the lights in Albany with Andrew McAdorey also scoring two goals and dishing out two assists. They’ll be back in action against the Carolina Chaos for Saturday Night Lacrosse on Saturday at 7:00 p.m. ET on ESPN+.
