Cool as ice: Outlaws make Logan McNaney first goalie drafted in 2025

Matt DeLuca. Brett Dobson. Liam Entenmann. And now Logan McNaney. These are the only goalies taken in the first 12 picks in the draft since 2019, with the Denver Outlaws making McNaney the fourth member of this elite fraternity Tuesday night.
The goalie class was really a two-horse race between McNaney and Penn’s Emmett Caroll, who went 12 picks later to the Maryland Whipsnakes.
At the beginning of the draft process, Carroll was Denver’s target in the second round, but McNaney emerged as the target as the season went along. In the end, there’s one trait that made McNaney stand out to Denver: poise.
“He’s so calm,” Outlaws head coach Tim Soudan said on draft night. “We just love his poise.”
McNaney boasts an all-time great resume for a college goalie. He won the Most Outstanding Player for the 2022 Final Four, making 17 saves against Cornell to lead Maryland to a national title.
He’s built a resume for big moments, becoming the most prolific goalie in the Terrapins’ illustrious lacrosse history. His draft stock was underwhelming entering the year, however, fresh off the least impressive season of his career in 2024.
McNaney posted career-worst numbers for goals against average (10.43) and save percentage (50.3%), keeping him well below Carroll at the beginning of the draft process. But in his final season of college ball, McNaney became a supernova.
He’s sixth in the country in save percentage at a career-best 58.3% and fourth nationally in goals against average at 8.05. His dynamic 2025 season has been a return to form for the sixth-year senior, solidifying his status as one of the college game’s all-time greats.
But McNaney's resume isn’t the only thing that sold Denver on the Terrapin great. It also was his references.
As a kid from Corning, N.Y., in the upstate region, McNaney was familiar to both Soudan and his longtime starting goalie: John Galloway. Soudan called Galloway in the leadup to the draft to ask for his input, and McNaney came with rave reviews.
Galloway praised the Maryland shot-stopper’s mindset, saying he was almost jealous of McNaney’s cool under pressure, according to Soudan.
McNaney’s bona fides come straight from the Outlaws’ leadership, as well. He’s been the bedrock of Denver defenseman Jesse Bernhardt’s defense at Maryland for the last six years. Soudan and the staff have long valued the input of the players in the pre-draft process.
“We take their input, and then we just decide who's gonna be the best fit,” Soudan said. “It's kind of a group effort when it comes to that.”
With McNaney entering into a fierce goalie competition with returning starter Owen McElroy, the six-year Terp can lean on his poise and experience at the next level.
