Maryland Whipsnakes sign midfielder Colin Heacock

By Adam Lamberti | Mar 5, 2024

The Maryland Whipsnakes have signed former Chrome LC midfielder Colin Heacock on the first day of free agency, the team announced.

The move reunites Colin Heacock with his University of Maryland classmate Matt Rambo. The two were as good a 1-2 punch on attack in recent memory, winning a National Championship together in 2017.

Heacock is a good fit for the Whipsnakes offense. He's a slashing-type lefty that provides depth at the midfield unit. While he had a down year in 2023 shooting only 10% on an abysmal Chrome LC offense, Heacock still strikes me as a great secondary option at the midfield. Likely to receive a short-stick on game days, Heacock is a good bet to be playing in a lot of two-man games with Rambo, where they will have instant chemistry together. Heacock, playing with better offensive weapons now, is likely to see improved production as well as he plays well within a balanced offense.

I had speculated that the Whipsnakes could be buyers during the free agent period due to numerous roster moves, and while this signing is a hot start, I still think the Whipsnakes have more moves in them.

I would guess the Whipsnakes are still going to target a close defenseman in free agency after trading away Bryce Young to Boston in the offseason. There had been a belief that 2023 Dave Pietramala Defensive Player of the Year Garrett Epple could potentially become a Whipsnakes, but those prospects were put to rest today after Epple signed with the Boston Cannons.

Utah Archers close defenseman Matt McMahon could be a potential option as the free agency period moves on.
