Outlaws draftee Logan McNaney shows championship mettle for Maryland

The biggest selling point for Denver Outlaws draftee Logan McNaney is his cool in the clutch. The sixth-year senior at Maryland is one of the top goalies in the country, but more than any great netminder in college lacrosse, he’s elite when the lights are brightest.
As he looks to lead the Terrapins to another National Championship — the second of his career — he once again locked it down between the pipes, helping Maryland to a 9-6 win over Georgetown in the quarterfinals.
In typical Terrapin fashion, the game was a defensive bout, and McNaney held serve and shut the door on the spunky Hoyas. He made 11 saves at 65% to anchor the defense and secure a spot on Memorial Day weekend.
Immediately he was put to the test against the best. Georgetown’s Aidan Carroll, a first-round pick by the Maryland Whipsnakes, barrelled down the alley for a wide-open rip, but McNaney stood firm and made one of the more explosive stops you’ll see from the veteran.

His next stop was classic McNaney: robbery on the doorstep. Nobody in the college game steals more goals right at the crease than McNaney. This is where his uncanny calm allows him to thrive, not wilting as an attacker approaches but holding his ground and making the play.

Like any great scorer, Carroll got a few past McNaney. But the Terrapins defense made him work for it, and McNaney got his wins, as well, saving a few more weak efforts from the future Whipsnake.
In crunch time, McNaney’s calm presence closed the game once again. As Carroll swept, he held steady on his line. As the ball found Jordan Wray on the crease, McNaney held steady on his line.
The lack of movement made the shot harder on Wray, who sprayed a half-hearted backhand off of the Maryland netminder’s stick. But McNaney took it to the next level. He reacted before anyone else on the field to get after the ground ball and all but assure the Terrapins’ win.

McNaney will look to end his college career with another championship before an eventual goalie battle with Owen McElroy in training camp and throughout the season. The Terrapins face another bevy of future pros with Syracuse in the Final Four on Saturday.
