PLL Fantasy: Three start ’em, three sit ’em for Fairfield
By Paul Lamonaca | Jul 17, 2024
With a neutral site at Fairfield, all eight PLL teams will be in action this Friday and Saturday. Let’s look at which players are steals and which are too expensive this week in Weekly Fantasy:
Start
Brendan Krebs, Goalie, Maryland Whipsnakes (33 coins)
Krebs averaged 28.8 fantasy points per week with an ROI of 0.88 in the first half of the season, and at 33 coins, he’s one of the cheaper goaltenders on the market.
The Whipsnakes will face the Carolina Chaos this Friday. Carolina has not played since June 29 and currently ranks last in the league in scores per game.
In Maryland’s two wins this season, Krebs has averaged 30.5 fantasy points. A Whipsnakes victory will most likely mean a standout performance by Krebs.
Luke Wierman, Faceoff, Denver Outlaws (26 coins)
The rookie out of Maryland has been one of the top performers in his draft class. Wierman has averaged 22.2 fantasy points through four games and has an astonishingly high ROI of 1.54 points per coin. To put it into perspective, the league-average ROI for a faceoff specialist is 0.84 points per coin.
Wierman has a knack for pushing the ball in transition – always an asset for fantasy faceoff specialists. His opponent this week is Philadelphia Waterdogs rookie Alec Stathakis, who is averaging 5.9 fantasy points per game and has an ROI of 0.56 points per coin.
Tre Leclaire, Midfield, Utah Archers (24 coins)
Leclaire has become an amazing complement to the powerful midfield group that the Archers boast in Tom Schrieber and Grant Ament. Leclaire currently leads the league in shooting percentage at 62.5% and ranks fifth among midfielders with 23 fantasy points per game.
With talents like Ament and Schrieber playing alongside Leclaire, it is very rare for him to draw the attention of opposing teams’ long-stick midfielders. For 24 coins, I think this is a great insert for a reliable midfielder.
Sit
Zac Tucci, Faceoff, Boston Cannons (7 coins)
After having the best fantasy performance out of all faceoff specialists during Philadelphia Weekend, Tucci has cooled down significantly.
Since then, Tucci has gone below 50% in two of the last three games. In those three games, he put up a total of 14.4 fantasy points.
While his salary cap hit may be low, he will be facing off against one of the league’s best in Trevor Baptiste. Spend the coins on a more reliable specialist.
Connor Shellenberger, Attack, New York Atlas (46 coins)
I was having difficulty deciding which Atlas attackman to include in this column. But I ultimately believe that if any New York player is blanketed this weekend, it will be Shellenberger.
Shellenberger is the clear Rookie of the Year favorite, but this weekend he will be matched up against the league’s best defense in the Cannons, who allow the fewest scores per game of any team.
In the lone game the Atlas lost this season, Shellenberger was held to just two points on 34 touches.
While Jeff Teat is New York’s playmaker on the attack, Shellenberger is the quarterback. Expect the Cannons to put him under pressure and force the Atlas to initiate through another source.
Jack Hannah, Midfield, Philadelphia Waterdogs (30 coins)
Hannah put up 60 total fantasy points over his first two appearances this season, but the uncertainty surrounding Philly’s game plan makes me wary.
The Waterdogs run a variety of midfield lines throughout a game, and it’s simply too difficult to tell who their top point-scorer coming from the box will be.
Spending 30 coins on a player who might not put up more than 15 fantasy points is not a risk that I’m willing to take. There are cheaper options on the market with better value.
