The Philadelphia Waterdogs have added depth and competition at goalie, signing veteran Tim Troutner to a one-year contract.

Troutner joins Philadelphia after spending five seasons with the California Redwoods and one season with the New York Atlas.

The 28-year-old lefty was named PLL Rookie of the Year in 2019 and earned All-Star honors in 2019 and 2021 with the Redwoods, followed by another All-Star selection in 2024 with the Atlas.

Troutner’s role in New York shifted in 2024, when rookie Liam Entenmann took over the starting job midway through the season. Troutner served as Entenmann’s backup for the remainder of the year and was not on a roster last season.

Across his career, Troutner has appeared in 42 PLL games, posting a 53.8% save percentage with 454 saves and 422 goals allowed.

The Waterdogs alternated between Dillon Ward and Matt DeLuca in goal last season, with the unit ranking near the bottom of the league in total saves and save percentage. Troutner will compete with Ward and DeLuca for playing time as Philadelphia enters training camp in the spring.

“Timmy was an All-Star, as Dillon has been for many years,” general manager Dave Cottle said. “He knows what this league is about. He’s going to have to come out and compete with Matt and Dillon to see who is the best goalie.”

Cottle added that the Waterdogs were not actively targeting defensive additions but moved quickly once Troutner became available.

“It was a situation where last year, probably, it didn’t play as well as we would’ve liked in the goal, so we wanted to upgrade the competition there,” Cottle said.

Troutner, a High Point graduate, is entering his seventh PLL season.
