Whipsnakes LC signs Will Perry to Championship Series contract

Whipsnakes LC has signed midfielder Will Perry to a Championship Series contract.

Perry played in two games for the Whipsnakes back in 2021 and reported to training camp for them this past season. While ultimately there was not a fit for him in their midfield group this last year, he’ll get another opportunity with the club this February in the Olympic-style game.

Perry was a standout midfielder at the University of North Carolina in all five years of his collegiate career. A known sharpshooter, Perry recorded 103 goals in his five years in Chapel Hill. He led the team in goals in 2019, and in his fifth year became the program’s all-time midfield points leader (141).

“He can shoot the ball really, really well,” said Whipsnakes head coach Jim Stagnitta. “He was a part of a midfield line with Justin Anderson and Tanner Cook that just combined three really good players with different skill sets and he was the scorer and shooter of that group.”

Stagnitta picked Perry up from the player pool in July of the 2021 season. He appeared in two games for the Whips in August but struggled to find a fit in that offense. However, given the high-volume shooting aspect of the Olympic format that’ll be played in the Championship Series, Stagnitta sees a lot of potential for Perry to excel for the Whips.

“We have not been a great shooting team,” remarked Stagnitta. “He’ll be a great asset in hopefully changing that and it’s a great opportunity to reintroduce him in our lineup and really spend some time with him and work with him. He has a skill set that I think we could really use and that will hopefully help us in this Championship Series.”

While Stagnitta mentions the obvious immediate advantage of having a great shooter like Perry in their lineup in a format where the two-point line is closer than in field, he also sees the addition of Perry for the tournament as a possible big picture payoff.

“It’s two-pronged for us. We get to bolster our lineup with someone who has been with us and we have experience with, but we also get to give him more time and opportunity to hopefully and possibly evolve into someone who could be a consistent member of our roster.”

Perry’s one of the first Championship Series signings of the offseason. The PLL trade window will close on December 2nd.

The Championship Series comes to The St. James in Washington, D.C. from February 22nd through 26th as the top four teams from the 2022 regular season compete against one another in a round robin style tournament. Learn more about the Championship Series here.
