The Whipsnakes have signed former Richmond midfielder Luke Frankeny from the player pool.
Racking up 34 goals in his final collegiate season, Frankeny brings depth to a midfield group that needs reworking. Outside of 2022 All-Stars Brad Smith and Mike Chanenchuk, the only other midfielders currently listed on the Whipsnakes roster (Keegan Khan and Wheaton Jackoboice) have combined for 10 career points.
A lefty, Frankeny’s long-range ability made him Richmond’s first option on most man-up situations, including this one to tie it up late against UPenn in the first round of the NCAA Tournament in 2022.
He’s also a threat with his feet moving. Defenders know Frankeny wants his left hand, yet are unable to stop him from getting his shot. This lefty sweep was the eventual game winner in the 2022 SoCon Tournament Championship game.
While the midfield position is likely to be addressed in the upcoming draft with fellow left-handed prospects Matt Campbell (Villanova) and Thomas McConvey (Virginia) being linked to the Whipsnakes in early rounds, Frankeny’s shooting ability make him an interesting addition for head coach and general manager Jim Stagnitta.
