Boston Cannons midfielder Connor Kirst

PLL Fantasy: The best players you never picked

By Paul Lamonaca | Aug 21, 2024

If you’ve been playing PLL Weekly Fantasy this season, you know about the stars who put up big points week in, week out. I’m talking about Jeff Teat, Tom Schrieber and Trevor Baptiste. These players were picked by at least 20% of all fantasy users during the 2024 regular season.

But what about the hidden gems?

With the Cash App Playoffs coming up, let’s take a look at some of the best players who weren’t often rostered on fantasy teams and how you could use them during the postseason.

Connor Kirst, Midfield, Boston Cannons

Percent of teams rostered: 2.02%

Playing a pivotal role as a two-way midfielder for the Cannons this season, Kirst averaged 15.87 fantasy points per game. He also finished with an ROI of 1.42 points per coin, significantly higher than the league average for midfielders (0.9).

After beating the Chaos in overtime to close out the regular season, Boston will face Carolina again in the quarterfinals on Sept. 2.

Adam Poitras, Midfield, Maryland Whipsnakes

Percent of teams rostered: 0.81%

Poitras is part of a young Whipsnakes core that helped them win their final four games and clinch a playoff berth after a slow start to the 2024 campaign.

In seven regular-season appearances, Poitras averaged 19.57 fantasy points and maintained an ROI of 1.52 points per coin.

With Maryland facing the Outlaws in the quarterfinals, I expect Poitras to fill a similar role to his last outing against Denver, which saw him finish with 19 fantasy points. With an average salary of 12.86 coins, he is a very affordable option in the second midfield slot.

Jake Stevens, Midfield, New York Atlas

Percent of teams rostered: 1.29%

Stevens has been able to produce for New York since his rookie debut on June 28, scoring a goal in five of his last six contests. In the one game he did not score, he still finished with two assists.

Stevens is a budding All-Star who can play virtually any role his team needs. With Stevens averaging 15 fantasy points per week and an ROI of 1.15 points per coin, he is another great addition to your lineup.

Owen McElroy, Goalie, Denver Outlaws

Percent of teams rostered: 6.29%

In the Outlaws’ second game of the season, head coach Tim Soudan decided to give his second-string goalie from his two previous years a chance, and he never looked back.

McElroy was the backbone of a Denver team that finished 5-4 in games he started and ranked fourth in scores against average. He wrapped up the regular season averaging 26.44 fantasy points per game and holding an ROI of 0.91 points per coin.

With McElroy generally being one of the lower-priced netminders this season, I would expect the same trend in the postseason. I am always a big believer in McElroy’s upside and am excited to see his performance in the quarterfinals against Maryland.

Mac O’Keefe, Attack, Utah Archers

Percent of teams rostered: 8.38%

While the percentage of teams that picked O’Keefe is relatively high compared to the other players on the list, he had some tough competition.

O’Keefe finished the regular season averaging 24 fantasy points per game and ranked 13th among attackmen in total fantasy points. With Utah’s offense now down two starters in Matt Moore and 2023 league MVP Schreiber, O’Keefe will have a much more integral role in the Cash App Playoffs.

Utah earned a bye to the semifinals and will wait to play the winner of Outlaws-Whipsnakes on Sept. 7.
