A full team effort powered the Whipsnakes to a 12-5 win over Chrome on Saturday evening.
The defense held Chrome to one goal in the second half. Michael Ehrhardt was all over the field as usual. Mike Chanenchuk scored the last three Whipsnakes goals and paced the offense with six points.
Petey LaSalla went a perfect 20-20 at the faceoff as the Whipsnakes made some effective adjustments to the 32 second shot clock, resulting in some good chances and this goal by Chanenchuk as well.
The result shouldn’t come as a surprise for Whipsnakes fans. With the team finally getting fully healthy, the Whipsnakes look to build back to championship form against last-place Chrome, who has struggled mightily this season.
But it was still refreshing to see the Whipsnakes take care of business as expected.
The Whipsnakes opened up with a 5-2 lead after one quarter of play, but Chrome held them scoreless in the second quarter to cut the lead to 5-4 going into the half.
From there, it was all Whipsnakes.
Will Manny, Connor Kirst, Zed Williams, and Mike Chanenchuk scored goals for the Whipsnakes while the defense didn’t allow a goal until six minutes left in the fourth quarter. The defense played connected all evening in front of goalie Brendan Krebs who made 12 saves, and even joined the defensive action as well.
Because seven teams make the playoffs, the Whipsnakes are basically a lock to make it and are heating up at the right time.
While all the talk is on the Archers and Waterdogs as championship favorites and frontrunners for the first round bye, we all know what the Whipsnakes have in that locker room, not to mention the championship experience almost all of the players and coaches already have.
The Whipsnakes head to Denver to face the Chaos again sporting their throwback uniforms as they look to extend their win streak to three on Friday at 8 p.m. ET.
