Halfway through the season, Dillon Ward flattened his infamous arc. Rather than attacking shooters’ angles, he sat back in his crease to read and react. The shift was one of many made by the Waterdogs’ defense -- including moving Liam Byrnes down low, making Ben Randall a full-time starter, and dressing Matthew Whitcher.

After the shift, Ward saved 60.8% of assisted shots (up from 41.5% prior). He was tracking the ball better as it pinged around the perimeter -- and picking the right moments to step out.
